Coach Piraino began fencing at Newfield High School on Long Island, where he was a four year varsity athlete and two time Undefeated League and County Championship Team member. He trained under legendary coach, Van Wolosin, and earned All-County honors for three consecutive seasons. He also was the 2002 Individual Suffolk County HS Epee Champion. Robert went on to train at The Ohio State University, under the instruction of world renowned fencing master, Vladimir Nazlymov. In his freshman year, he earned a top 10 finish at the Midwest Conference Individual Championships, and was a member of the Midwest Conference Championship Team. Robert has competed at the U.S. Junior Olympics, North American Cups and Summer National Championships. He is a five time Empire State Games team member, earning two Bronze and three team Gold medals, and is also the 2008 US National Foil Champion (DIII). In the 2003-2004 season, Coach Piraino was the Assistant Coach at his alma mater, Newfield High School, helping the team to a second place finish at the Suffolk County Team Championships. He brought his expertise to Great Neck South High School in the fall of 2004, and in his first season, Coach Piraino led the Great Neck South boys to the Division Championship and a silver medal at the Nassau County Team Championships. The following season yielded a second Division Championship for the boys, and a Bronze Medal at the County Championships for the girls team. He has coached athletes to All-County and All-Long Island honors, as well as Junior and Individual Champions. In 2008, Coach Piraino led the boy’s team to another Division I Championship, and a Nassau County Team Championship, their first under his instruction. The team followed up with another title in 2009, and most recently in 2010, he led them to a third consecutive team championship. Currently, Robert is a nationally rated referee in all weapons, and has refereed at levels including the US National Championships.
